There is a misconception that self-esteem and self-confidence is intertwined, when in fact each has its own place when it comes to how we view ourselves and having a strong sense of who we are as individuals. So let’s break it down.
Self-Esteem
Self-esteem is centered on how we think, feel, and what we believe about ourselves. Our level of self-esteem can be affected by different factors including our family upbringing and socio-economic status. Self-esteem is an internal concept- meaning we derive our worth from our own minds and feelings as opposed to external factors like validation from others. A healthy self-esteem is exhibited in a number of ways, such as: by someone who is not afraid to verbally express themselves, don’t see failure as a detriment, and can receive constructive criticism in a positive way. Self-respect is also important- it means to have honor within yourself and live your life with dignity. One must begin to shift their mindset from false perception to reality. Those with low self-esteem tend to see things in a way that is not based in reality, but based on their own insecurities. Always work from facts not fiction. Start by recognizing and focusing on your strengths.
Self-Confidence
Confidence is having a positive, accurate, and realistic way in which you view yourself. It is believing in yourself. When you are confident, you know you have the skills and talent needed to handle various life situations. Adopting a confident mindset allows you to maintain clear thoughts and block self-doubt. This enables you to not be afraid to ask for help when you need it and work on acquiring skills you don’t have. There are times when we lose our confidence and start to doubt ourselves, such as failing an exam, being bullied, or experiencing a parental divorce. It is in these times that it is crucial to seek help from someone you trust in order to learn how to gain back your internal power. Confidence is about knowing what you value and knowing you are valuable.
Attaining a healthy self-esteem and confidence takes a willingness to look within yourself. You can’t do it alone though. As mentioned before, speak to someone you trust and who is able to guide you to becoming more comfortable with you are and who you want to be.
